Airfield 4-H Swamp Shooters begin 2011 Season
By Barton Metzgar
On Sunday, 9 January 2011, the Airfield 4-H Swamp Shooters began their new shooting season. Around 20 participants braved the freezing cold to listen to their instructors introduce their discipline, and walk through the range procedures.
The primary goal of 4-H Shooting Education is “to enhance development of self-concept, character and personal growth through safe, educational and socially acceptable involvement in shooting activity.” Swamp Shooters provides an opportunity to “promote the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship, and ethical behavior.” To teach these standards, instructors use shooting sports to help instill responsibility in participants who range in age from 9 to 19.
There are currently four disciplines offered to the Airfield Swamp Shooters; Small Bore Rifle taught by Coaches Greg Metzgar and Stan Winner, Skeet / Trap with Coach Dale Mullin, Air Pistol with Coach Jeff Shaffer, and Archery with Coach Angela Wunnenberg. Collectively, the Swamp Shooter instructors have over a century of shooting and 4-H experience for the participants to draw from.
Swamp Shooters meets on the second and fourth Sundays of the month from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. There is no cost to join, however, depending on your discipline (e.g. shotgun, rifle, etc.) you may need to have safety equipment such as eye and ear protection. Shooting sports will require the purchase of ammunition (.22 Long Rifle or 20 Gauge). For those who might not have a rifle or shotgun, there are club firearms which can be used. In the spring and late summer, Swamp Shooters can participate in the 4-H District and State Shooting matches. There is also an opportunity to participate in the 4-H/NRA Shooting Education Camp held in August.
The next time you are on the range, you might just see the Swamp Shooters. Please stop by and say hello. Swamp Shooters members are almost always interested in learning about various firearms. If you have an interesting firearm and don’t mind sharing your knowledge with our young shooters, your efforts will most certainly be appreciated. If you know of a young person who you think would want to participate, please feel free to contact the Swamp Shooters Coordinator, Mrs. Marcy Shaffer at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Swamp Shooters would also like to thank the Airfield Shooting Club (ASC) for the great support and dedication provided to the Swamp Shooters. This support is an invaluable investment in building the next generation’s passion to keep the shooting sports alive and vibrant.
