ASC President's Commentary -- Help Wanted

The ASC Board will be short a few Board members at the end of this 2009/2010 term.  Our Secretary, Vice President, and Shotgun Director have given us notice that they will not be seeking additional terms; therefore their positions will be vacant.  Another of our Board members that currently holds a general Director position resigned because he had to temporarily move out of state to complete the final stage of his PhD program.  Our Club currently has approximately 200 members.  I have to believe that out of that number the

At renewal time each year, the ASC Board members often hear ASC members ask:  “How do I get my service hours?” or “Why do you require service hours?” or “What qualifies as ASC approved service?”  The ASC By-laws state in Article IV, Section 2b & c:

The Airfield Shooting Club (ASC) currently operates on the Honor System for its members to use the ranges.  The ASC Board requires that all of our members follow and obey each of the Range Rules and Regulations (Rules) as set by the ASC Board.  In our Rules, each member is required to act as the Range Safety Officer (RSO) at appropriate times and to control the use by all members and to ensure safety and compliance with the Rules.  The RSO and all members on the range are entrusted to immediately correct any member committing a Rule violation.

There are new changes coming in the New Year for the ASC!  The most recent change that you may have noticed is the new ASC website.  The new website is up and running, but it is still in its “beta testing” form as we continue to work out the bugs and try to improve it further.  One improvement is that this new website will allow our members to communicate with one another via the various boards that it provides to post messages.

Hopefully, all of you received my e-mail alert concerning the Sussex County Board of Supervisors meeting on November 19, 2009.  I know that many of you received it, because you joined me at the Sussex Courthouse to voice our concerns with regards to Sussex County possibly requiring any pistol and shotgun ranges being constructed in areas zoned A-1 to apply for conditional use permits.  The meeting was one of many that the Board of Supervisors have had since August to consider the Planning Commission’s unanimous recommendation that the Board of Supervisors amend the current zoning

In my last newsletter column, I advertised our next Women on Target class coming up on Saturday, November 14, 2009.  I was one of the instructors at the last Women on Target class held in April of this year.  We had fifty enthusiastic ladies that attended.  As one of the instructors, I witnessed ladies that were initially nervous or unsure, and whose statements were “I’m not sure I can do that.” or “Do I have to shoot a rifle?”, but soon those statements changed to “Let me try that again!” or “I cannot wait to buy my own rifle (shotgun, pistol, etc.).”  The class provide

ASC President's Commentary -- Our Next Target

The ASC Board is working harder than ever for the ASC members! We have a lot of targets to shoot for on our agenda.  One main target is the construction of a new divider wall to be erected between the 50 yd. and 100 meter ranges.  We previously solicited bids to get an idea of the cost of constructing this divider wall.  We have investigated different materials to use to construct the wall, and we are now very close to moving the project forward.  The divider wall will allow the two ranges to operate independently so that when the 100 meter range goes “cold” the 50 yd.
